The Union Canal is fairly unusual as it is a contour canal, following the one 73-metre (240 ft) level contour throughout its 31.5 mile length. It runs from the Lochrin basin at Fountainbridge in Edinburgh Westwards without any locks until it gets to the Falkirk Wheel. From the Falkirk Wheel the Forth and Clyde Canal then travels Westwards on to Glasgow and the River Clyde and also Eastwards to the River Forth at Grangemouth.  To keep it level there are a large amount of aqueducts and even a tunnel where the canal passes under the Antonine Wall.
